Yarr!
The Pittsburgh Pirates opened the hometown baseball season today, as you might have heard.
I’m not really into most sports, though I have noted some exceptions in this space before. I’ve been to a few baseball games, though, and almost enjoyed the experience. Forgive me, baseball fans, but your sport is pretty boring.
Even so, I think it’s definitely within the grasp of the team’s ownership and marketing division to really cash in on this pirate craze sweeping the internet and, by extension, the world.
1) Talk Like a Pirate Day. It’s on September 19th, right in the swing of the baseball season. Make the PA announcer talk like a pirate, and encourage the vendors to do so as well. Encourage people to come dressed as pirates.
2) Additional mascots. How about a group of surly, heavily made-up and delightfully campy pirates that wander around the park, handing out toy swords and eye patches to the fans?
3) New hat logo. Make the hat black and stick a jolly roger on it. You’ll sell millions.
Ideas of your own? Post them in the comments.
