The 17-year-old sensation from Seattle, Sanjaya Malakar, has finally been booted off American Idol.
I might not consider this local news, but apparently 38 million votes were cast. When I was watching — and yes, between drafting papers for grad school, I bathe my tired brain cells in the numbing glow of the cathode ray tube — I had the TV on mute. I think Martina McBride was singing. Actually, I’m sure she was singing, because I could still hear her! Turns out my next door neighbors were watching American Idol too. Loud.
Sanjaya was a favorite of this website, and was the American Idol competitor that Howard Stern most loved to hate. Will he find someone else with whom to torture Simon Cowell? Or forget about American Idol until next season?
I’m sure that all the teenagers with Sanjaya crushes won’t forget him, and chances are they won’t have to wait long for him to reappear in our cultural backwash. Maybe a talk show on MTV? A cartoon? A toothpaste commercial? Anything — just don’t let him sing.
