What is a Pittsburgh Drink?

The Atlanta Metroblog is featuring the Drink of the Week (this week is an awesome mojito. This drink of the week idea got me thinking about what is a Pittsburgh drink. A few years ago I was doing some work in Houston and we were sitting at the bar and I asked the group “what is the Texas drink?” The response was “long island iced tea” - which certainly didn’t seem very Texas to me.
So, when people visit Pittsburgh - what is the suggested Pittsburgh drink? I know the immediate answer is Iron City Beer. I know this is a drink favored by Pittsburghers everywhere. Last summer I helped a family pack up a case of iron to take with them to their son who now lives in Alaska. But is there a mixed drink that really screams Pittsburgh?

While it’s not a mixed drink in the traditional sense, I think a boilermaker is pretty Pittsburgh. It’s just a more efficient way to down yr Imp n’ Ahrn.

Mine isn’t exactly a mixed drink either, but nothing says Pittsburgh to me more than a good old Yaeger Bomb. When I lived in Los Angeles I had to go to “Steelers bars” to watch the games on Sundays. I could spot the Pittsburgh transplants from a mile away…they were the ones downing Yaeger Bombs at 9 am. I love this city :)

A boilermaker is a shot of whiskey, especially Imperial, dropped into a beer. Basically a Jaeger Bomb with whiskey instead.

I’d go with the JagerBomb as well.

A Jaeger Bomb is made with an energy drink, not beer. Also, you don’t shoot a boilermaker like you do with the various drinks with “bomb” added to the end.

The Bomb drinks are consumed fast because they are based on the “Carbomb,” which contains Bailey’s Irish Cream, which will curdle in beer if left there for a couple of seconds. It will still be safe to drink after that, but kind of gross.

The Boilermaker, on the other hand, you just drink at normal speed. For those who don’t just want a shot of whiskey it goes down smoother, for those who are looking to get drunk quick because they need to sleep it off before the next graveyard shift at the mill it provides an extra kick.
