Fred Rogers: Best Fundraiser Ever

I can’t remember now how I came across this awesome display of fundraising ability by Fred Rogers in 1969. I am more than slightly a libertarian, but one has to be pretty impressed by his simple, intense commitment.

Thanks, John. I just watched the clip with my daughter (almost 7) and we both were moved by it. The genius of Fred Rogers was the intensity of his daily gift of quiet caring. So direct, so thoughtful. I’m bookmarking it to watch again.

Great example of good fundraising. This is also a textbook example of a “program” staff member, not a professional fundraiser, making the pitch. Several recent news items have indicated that more program people are being asked to assist with the fundraising process, and Mr. Rogers’ appeal shows that it works. It works because he communicated his passion for the program and the hoped-for outcomes. Yes, Rogers did a great job. But I want to know who made it possible for Rogers to get his audience with the Senate? In my opinion, that person is “the best fundraiser ever.” I’ve been a fundraiser for 22 years and my best work is almost always done behind the scenes.
