Bus Stop Opera (maybe) performs again this weekend

Bus Stop Opera is slated to perform again this weekend (I’m guessing here, but possibly the last performance, unless the cast and crew are sticking around after the semester ends).  However, no route is posted.  So if you’re on the bus or at a bus stop around Oakland and the East Busway between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. tomorrow and see people spontaneously breaking out into song and dance, don’t worry, it was supposed to happen.

VGL comes to Pittsburgh

Yesterday, Video Games Live announced 45 new shows, including two in July to be held at Heinz Hall.  Video Games Live puts on a show will a full symphony orchestra, including pieces from Tetris, Mario, Halo, Myst, Zelda, Rainbow Six and many more.  The show features stage performers, video of the games , an interactive video game experience for a few lucky fans and a pre-show festival.

The show was supposed to come to Pittsburgh in 2006, but a good portion of the tour had to be cancelled, and they haven’t been here yet.

More information about VGL can be found here.

Countdown to XLIII: 1

Kotaku is reporting about this weekend’s Madden Bowl.  While it is different than the EA simualtion of the game, it all seems a bit confusing, a bit of overload.

But, more importantly, Willie Parker will be representing The Steelers (although he does not necessarily have to play as The Steelers).  Other professional and collegiate athletes will be participating, as well as visits from other celebrities as well.

Want to get in on the action:

For a chance to battle NFL All-Pro Linebacker Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens) on Xbox 360 direct from the Madden Bowl, send a friend request to the Xbox LIVE gamertag “RLewisGWF” between 8:00 – 9:00 PM

I don’t have a 360, and have never been on Xbox LIVE, so I don’t know how friend requests work there, but hey, good luck!

Countdown to XLIII: 5 (take 2)

Oh my goodness, two posts in one day, and both about the Steelers.  Although truth be told, this one is about the Steelers and video games.

EA played their sixth annual game of Madden to call the Super Bowl, and so far, they are 4-1.  The game, according to EA Sports, will be won by the Steelers, 28-24.

Another good omen?  Or just a silly publicity stunt?  Maybe a bit of both.

Food Network Challenge: City Skylines

Food Network Challenge (which is airing right now, and as I speak, being recorded since I knew I would miss the beginning of it) is featuring City Skylines, one of which is Pittsburgh.  I noticed it during one of the commercials earlier in the week, there was a stack of cake that looked like the USX Tower.

Since it is early in the compeition, I don’t know if the “UPMC” sign will be added (I guess it also depends when the episode was filmed), but I’ll update later when there is a winner and hopefully get a picture of the finished cake.  Right now, of the four teams, Pittsburgh seems to be in third in terms of progression to final product, but who knows how that will change by the end of the hour.

UPDATE: Well, the Pittsburgh cake didn’t win (Seattle did, although I am going to go ahead and call shenanigans as all but one of the buildings were made of cardboard, not cake), but they looked pretty bad.  All the competitors said the same thing, eight hours isn’t enough time to do a skyline cake.  The plans looked great, but I think they’re right, just not enough time.

Of the bottom three cakes (of four), I think Pittsburgh looked the best, and the fountain at the point worked, which was cool to see, but there wasn’t any detail on the USX Tower.  Oh well, it was still a cool challenge to watch.

Land development news not related to the casino

Two items of note from up here on the mountain.  The former Dinner Bell Tavern is now under new ownership and is now known as the Roadside Tavern.

Roadside Tavern, Route 40

Word is that the previous owners had irreconcilable differences and it revered to the owners before them since they still had two payments left.  It got sold once again and with a new coat of paint, we have a new establishment.  No longer red (reminiscent of the infamous chainsaw incident), and supposedly with a new interior as well, it opened this past weekend.  Presumably, Dinner Bell Road will remain, considering that one side of 40 is Dinner Bell Five Forks Road and the other is Dinner Bell Ohiopyle Road, otherwise, no news to report on the road names.

The next bit of news is rumor for now, I don’t know (and doubt) if either variation is true, I’ll have to do some more digging when I get to a better internet connection.  Nemacolin Woodlands has apparently either been under some sort of financial stress, or possibly just feeling the economic squeeze most people are.  Anyway, it is rumored that two entities are looking to purchase the property: Donald Trump or Disney.  It was rumored for a while that Trump bought the above mentioned Roadside Tavern, but that rumor quickly turned into Nemacolin.  Like I said, all speculation for now, but interesting bits of news nonetheless…and land news that has nothing to do with the North Shore.

Cut-and-paste: It’s not just for China anymore

The Post-Gazette has, on Sundays, been running a feature called “The Cutting Edge”, where they post snippets from Pittsburgh-related blogs. (Yes, I still get 90% of my news on dead trees. Portable, useful for stuffing shipping boxes, and doesn’t require me to pay some silly “hotspot” to read it.) It has sunk to new lows. You may recall that Chinese newspaper that accidentally recycled a story from The Onion?. Scroll down this week’s Cutting Edge and find “One of America’s great newspapers” doing the same thing. I’d like to hope they’re just adding it in as a bit of comic belief, but the lack of framing text makes me think someone there is just plain asleep at the switch.

Not to worry, though. They’re a “manufacturer” according to state law, and thus aren’t required to pay property taxes. With all that money they’re saving, I’m sure they can put it towards finding, you know, real news to report on once in a while.
